About The Plateaux Project

Plateaux is a worldbuilding project created by Clay Donaldson. Atchafa: A Living Guide to the World of Plateaux is the first chapter in this project, focusing on the dank, dense marshlands of the southeast province of Atchafa.

Plateaux is a unique fantasy world that draws inspiration from a variety of unconventional sources. The primary influences for Plateaux have been 19th and early 20th century Americana as well as the forgotten genre of American Fantasy seen in works such as Frank L. Baum's The Land of Oz books, alongside more conventional fantasy tropes found in works such as The Lord of the RingsThe Elder Scrolls, as well as Dungeons & Dragons' Forgotten Realms setting, and the cartoon sensibilities of series like Adventure Time.

In the world of Plateaux, humans and elves are a relatively recent development, leading the world to be more centered around a diverse variety of species and races from an assortment of animalfolk, sentient rocks, automatons, monkeyfolk from outer space, and more.

About The Land of Atchafa

The province of Atchafa makes up the southwest corner of the continent of Plateaux. Many consider its sopping marshes borderline uninhabitable, but a much louder crowd considers it home. As such, much of Atchafa's population is native to the area, typically being amphibious or reptilian.

Atchafa draws the majority of its inspiration from the American south, especially east Texas/southern Louisiana Cajun and Creole culture. Atchafa's marshlands are home to all kinds of people and stories, from thieving folk heroes to the overthrowing of fat-cat casino owners.
